The Best Hair and Makeup Trends in Cottagecore

Words by Chloe Taylor

From glowing skin and soft blush to floral line art and braids, we at Coterie have complied a list of the cutest hair and makeup trends in cottagecore.

Barefaced Beauty

Cottagecore is all about being at one with nature. It seems that this sentiment includes our makeup as well. Celebrate your natural features with this beautiful, barely there look!

Begin with making sure your skin is well hydrated. Apply a gentle, unscented moisturiser, letting it properly dry before you move onto the next step. We recommend the Aveeno Daily Moisturising Body Lotion. Although this may sound like a crime against makeup to some, do not put on any foundation. If you must, make sure it is light coverage. Let the gorgeous qualities you were born with shine through! For some this is their freckles speckled across their skin from the sun, elevating this summer look. For those who do not have naturally occurring freckles but want to have the look, why not try drawing them on yourself with a soft brown eyeliner pencil or even, the new from 2020 line of, temporary freckle makeup by Freck. Gently dab their buildable and long-lasting Faux Freckle Cosmetics Neutral across your face, blotting them after to soften and create more natural looking freckles.

Use a soft, pretty pink blush to create the illusion of a rosy, sun kissed cheek. Using a beauty sponge, pat Glossier’s Cloud Paint in Puff, a light pink cream blush, across your cheeks. Apply to the apples of the cheeks for a more youthful, doll-like look, or underneath the cheekbones for a sunny but chiselled look, without the need for harsh contouring. If pressed blushes are more your thing, try the Dandelion Brightening Finishing Powder by Benefit, a pretty ballerina pink blusher. Then glide a dewy cream highlight along the highpoints of your face – the cheekbones, temples, tip of the nose and cupids bow – to let your inner glow shine on the outside. We recommend using Glossier’s Haloscope, a “crystal-infused highlighter” with a vitamin rich “oil-based inner core”.

After, use a clear brow gel or wax, like Glossier’s Boy Brow in Clear, to set your eyebrows in their natural shade and shape. Don’t worry if their a bit messy, this look is all about embracing your natural beauty, overgrown hairs and all!

Use a lengthening mascara to separate and enhance your lashes. We recommend the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! Mascara.

Finish off the look by applying a hydrating lip balm for a perfect pout. The Glossier Balm Dot Com, a waxy skin salve made up of “nature’s heavy-duty moisturises”, like castor oil, beeswax and lanolin, leaves your lips feeling soft and nourished, with a soft and pretty tint.  For extra shine, swipe on a shimmery gloss. We recommend the Gloss Bomb by Fenty Beauty in the shade Fussy, a glittery high-shine rosy-pink.

A Toadstool Tint

If you’ve ever wanted to look like an anthropomorphic shroom who’s stepped out of a fairy-tale, then this is the look for you. Keeping the same face base as the previous look, apply a bright pink, or even a red, blush across the apple of your cheeks and the bridge of your nose. Try the Hotspot Soft Matte Blush by LimeCrime, in the shade Fire Red-Pink. Then, using a white liquid liner, gently draw dainty dots across the mushroom coloured flush. Pair with a reddish gloss, such as Glossier’s shiny, non-stick lip-gloss in the shade red, to complete the look.

Perfect, Pretty Plaits

Want to keep your hair out of your face, on those hot summer picnics, but still want to look elegant and presentable in case your very own Mr. Darcy comes strolling around the corner? Why not try fashioning a simple three strand plait. This look would work best on medium to long length hair. Brush out your hair, getting rid of any knot and tangles that you may have and then separate it into three separate sections at the back of your head. Hold one section in your left hand and two in your right. Take the piece furthest to the right and cross it over the middle section. Then take the leftmost strand and cross that back over the middle. Continue this process until you get to the end of your hair, then secure the brain with a clear elastic hairband. For a youthful and nostalgic look, follow this method to create two braids on either side of the head. To really complete the look, weave delicate little flowers, like baby’s-breath or daisies, through your braids.

Heavenly Half Up Half Down Styles

You can begin this style with any type of hair, from pin-straight strands to tight curls, long or on the shorter side, and anything in between!

Again, brush through your hair, making sure there are no knots or tangles. Slide a finger under the top half of your hair, on either side of your head, just above the ears, and pull it up, separating it from the bottom half. Carefully pull the section up to your desired height and tie it up with a thin hairband. Pull out strands to frame your face and wrap a satin ribbon it around band, of course coordinating it with whatever colour you decide to wear that day.

This style is also extremely customisable: wear in a half pony, baby bun or braided, with relaxed tousled waves or big, bouncy curls. The possibilities are endless!
